Do you feel lonely and isolated in your enterprise? Not sure where to turn to, or whom to turn to? When I first started my journey 33+ years ago I had no idea where or whom to turn to, so I ended up walking my journey alone for some time. Now I have a strong support network, but I have many clients and encounter many changemakers who have no one to turn to during their journey. They walk their path alone because they don’t know whom to turn to, or they are even too scared to share their problems even with family and friends.

Continuing on from last week’s blog post, 3 reasons why you need support as a social entrepreneur, I would like to discuss where you can get support as a changemaker right now. I have used these different networks in the past, and trust me when I say, it is good to have someone by your side whom you can bounce ideas off of and encourage you when your motivation is lacking. It is a positive thing to have someone who can offer advice and support when your drive is lacking.

Family and friends

This one might seem obvious, but some people might not feel as though their family and friends are a valid support network, but they are. These people already know your strengths and your weaknesses. They can give you advice based on your previous experience, and they will support you through tough decisions. Sometimes they may struggle to give advice on intricate parts of your social enterprise, but at the end of the day, they will be with you no matter what. They will support your purpose and your vision throughout your journey. All you have to do is turn to them and ask for help or support.

Social Entrepreneurs

Who knows your struggle better than your fellow social entrepreneurs? Family and friends are good for unconditional support, but when you are looking for advice from people who are or who have gone through similar things to you, then your fellow entrepreneurs are whom you should turn to.

Having people who know your struggle or just understand what you are going through is a great support network to have. That is one of the reasons why I set up my Facebook group, as its whole aim is to help social entrepreneurs and give them a place where they can interact with like-minded people.

You can even find like-minded people across LinkedIn and in person at networking events. It is refreshing to surround yourself with people who are in the same boat as you, who can offer advice from their own experience. This also gives you the option to share your own opinion and advice to your fellow entrepreneurs who are struggling with something you have experienced in the past.

Professional support

Family, friends and your fellow entrepreneurs are all good forms of a strong network, however, if you seek a solid form of support from an experienced and educated source that will know your enterprise inside and out, then you may need professional assistance.

Mentors, for example, are a good form of professional support, I myself mentor social entrepreneurs. Coaches are another form of professional support that will focus on a specific aspect of your business to help you succeed, and consultants are also a good form of support.

Each one of these networks can offer specific, educated advice on your social enterprise and they will have in-depth experience and knowledge about the struggles you are facing.

Let’s recap

Family and friends can be foundation support, people that might not be able to offer practical advice for specific problems, but they will always be there for you.

Fellow entrepreneurs, attend networking events, join online groups on Facebook and LinkedIn. Share your experiences, and take note of advice from other entrepreneurs.

Finally, seek professional support. There are many coaches, mentors and consultants that specifically cater to social entrepreneurs. This is where I reiterate that I am a successful serial social entrepreneur, who like to brainwash entrepreneurs into believing in themselves and convince them that they can achieve anything. So if you are looking for professional support right now, right this minute, then I am here. I can support you with your current challenges and we can see if my programs are a great fit for you.
